Kombucha is made by adding bacteria and yeast to sweetened black or green tea. Then we let the tea ferment for a week while the bacteria and yeast form a mushroom-like culture. This culture is called a SCOBY, which stands for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. In this Turtle tale, we’ll discuss some health benefits of drinking Kombucha.
Kombucha contains probiotics
During the fermentation process acetic acid are produced, along with several other acidic compounds and gases that make it carbonated. At the same time a large amount of bacteria also grow in the mixture, which have a probiotic function.
These probiotics provide your gut with healthy bacteria, which ‘fight’ the growth of the bad bacteria. This can improve your digestion and even help with weight loss. Probiotics can also promote detoxification by helping the liver get rid of toxins.
High in Antioxidants
As we said earlier, kombucha is made from tea. For our Tangy Turtle Kombucha, we use green tea and black tea, depending on the flavour we’re brewing. And fact is that tea, especially green tea, is rich in polyphenols. These antioxidants protect your cells from damage and help decrease inflammation. During the fermentation process we can even see an increase of these polyphenols, so the amount of antioxidants in kombucha is even higher than in regular tea.
On top of that, Kombucha is also rich in vitamin B and minerals, which can give your health a boost in many different ways too.
I’m thirsty now, who else wants a Kombucha? :-)
